Take Action to Help Feed the Jobless Today!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is reporting a record number of food stamp recipients in the wake of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. The department says the number of Americans receiving food stamps has topped 40 million as more and more families find themselves without a means to buy food.

Still, thousands of jobless Americans - especially those without dependants - are being denied food assistance because they don't meet the income requirements.

Even when applying for food stamps under meager unemployment benefits, many are being told they make too much money. Others have been forced to wait months for their application to be processed.

Congress must act now to address key issues with the U.S. food assistance system, officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Lawmakers must expand the income requirements to include the jobless, ensure that the long-term unemployed can readily qualify and increase the maximum benefit amount.

Demand Congress acts now to ensure every unemployed person receives the supplemental nutrition assistance they need to make it through these extremely difficult times.

Organizing Victory for Old Pueblo Lodge 933

All employees working for Defense Support Services, L.L.C. (DS-2) located at Tucson International Airport voted overwhelmingy for the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers and its Old Pueblo Lodge 933 to represent their interest with regards to working conditions, wages, and benefits.  This win brings the number of represented sites to twelve (12) for Old Pueblo Lodge 933 in Southern Arizona.  DBR, James Watson thanks Business Representative, Steve Taylor and DS-2 Chief Steward Richard Schweiss for all their hard work.  Brother Schweiss was key in getting this work site on board and educating these workers about what a Union can do for them and their families.

This is a major win for not only the new members at Tucson International Airport, but all defense workers in Pima County.  If you are aware of any worker or family members that are in need of a good strong Union, and want to organize their work site, please contact the Union Hall and talk to one of our Business Representatives.

UCubed

On January 15th, 2010, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers launched "Ur Union of Unemployed". This virtual union aims to unify the jobless in a unique and useful way.

Ur Union of Unemployed -- or UCubed as it is nicknamed -- connects the unemployed into cubes of people to end that sense of being all alone in this Grave Recession. It organizes those cubes into neighborhoods and then blocks – power blocks that politicians cannot ignore, purchasing blocks merchants cannot avoid. But most important, UCubed offers the unemployed a way to use their skills and talents to help others through these hard times even as they help themselves.

Please forward this to coworkers, friends and family who are unemployed, working part-time involuntarily or who have looked for a job in the last year but could not find one. Urge them to enter their zip code in the Build A Community bar at www.unionofunemployed.com

Since UCubed is open to everyone harmed by this economic turmoil forward this link to everyone on your contact list. Chances are they, too, will know friends or relatives who are unemployed or underemployed.
